Always Reading, Inc.

Our mission is to empower children with an abundance of knowledge through books.

Why We Do - What We Do

According to the US. Department of Education, 67% of fourth grade students are below proficiency in reading. In other words, nearly 2.4 million students struggle with reading at grade level.

At Always Reading, we are concerned with these reading statistics and we have great concern with what our children are learning when it comes to American History. In particular, how Black History is and is not incorporated into the American story. Black History is American History.  Therefore, a significant number of the books we provide for free are focused on exposing our children to the many stories untold or never talked about.

“One is astonished in the study of history at the recurrence of the idea that evil must be forgotten, distorted, skimmed over.  We must not remember that Daniel Webster got drunk but only remember that he was a splendid constitutional lawyer.  We must forget that George Washington was a slave owner…and simply remember the things we regard as creditable and inspiring.  The difficulty, of course, with the philosophy is that history loses its value as an incentive and example; it paints perfect men and noble nations, but it does not tell the truth.”  W.E.B. Dubois

“The Achieving Through Program has been so valuable to our school. Each day, the students race to get into the building to get to the Always Reading book nook just to see “what’s new”. The excitement on the parents faces has been tremendous! Thank you for supporting Scotts Branch for so many years and hopefully many more to come.”
— Lauren Tillman, Principal - Scotts Branch Elementary
“The Always Reading - Achieving Through Reading Program provides access and opportunity for students to self-select culturally relevant books without cost. The students of Hernwood Elementary school excitedly visit the free book display weekly to replenish their personal libraries with new and highly engaging books. Thanks to the generous donations of Always Reading, our students are provided an additional opportunity to interact with literature at home with their parents as well as with the classroom teacher. When visiting classrooms, I have observed teachers engaging in the read aloud process to expose students to a variety of new content provided by books donated by Always Reading. The program provides a much needed service to our school community.”
— Nashae Bennett, Ed. D. Principal - Hernwood Elementary School
